MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas won two tune-up games against Team Elevate, a selection of pro-am basketball players, in Miami, Florida, as they continue to prepare for the upcoming FIBA World Cup of Basketball.
In the first game, Gilas routed Team Elevate, 95-74, in a match that saw Filipino players match their foreign, taller counterparts in highlights.
Naturalized Filipino Andray Blatche of the Brooklyn Nets, who also participated in the tune-up games, was even seen cheering for one of Gilas forward Japeth Aguilar's dunks.
Team Elevate led during the first three quarters, but Gilas countered in the last period to win the game.
In the second game, Team Elevate tried to avenge their loss using their size against the smaller Gilas team. However, the Filipinos managed to finish with a 93-84 win.
Gilas will be heading next to Europe to participate in 9 tune-up games—in Italy and in France—before flying to Spain for the FIBA World Cup of Basketball in the last week of August.--Report from TJ Manotoc
