MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – The University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers edged the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers in double overtime, 84-82, on Saturday.
UST’s Aljon Mariano came through in the clutch for the Tigers, as he scored 11 of the Tigers’ last 13 points in the extra periods.
Mariano finished with 15 points and 5 rebounds.
Clark Bautista led all UST scorers with 21 points on 6 out of 9 shooting from beyond the arc.
La Salle was led by rookie Jeron Teng, who scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
La Salle started hot in the first quarter, leading by as much as 7 points.
But UST chipped away at the lead and eventually took over in the 3rd quarter by outscoring La Salle 27-18.
Going in to the final quarter, UST maintained an 8-point lead.
However, Archer point guard LA Revilla and Teng kept La Salle within striking distance, eventually taking a 70-69 lead deep in the 4th courtesy of a Revilla free throw.
Another free throw conversion gave the Archers a 71-69 lead with under 24 seconds left, but Mariano was able to tie the game with only 9 seconds left.
Revilla almost won the game for La Salle in regulation, but his buzzer-beating jumper was ruled out.
In the first overtime, the Tigers quickly built a 4-point lead. However, La Salle's Norberto Torres was able to tie the game at 80 apiece with only 30 seconds left, forcing another overtime.
Mariano scored 4 points in the second OT and it was enough to eke out a win. He scored the game-winning jumper with 7 seconds remaining.
The Archers had another poor showing at the line, missing 14 of their attempts.
In the extra periods, the Archers missed 4 crucial free throw attempts.
The loss is DLSU’s third straight after winning their first two games in Season 75 of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament.
UST, meanwhile, improved their win-loss record to 3-1.
