MANILA, Philippines -- Star point guard Roi Sumang took the blame for the University of the East's (UE) 55-57 loss to National University (NU), as he missed a potential game-tying lay-up in the dying seconds that doomed the Red Warriors.

Sumang scored 16 points in the game, but 11 of them came in the first half. He was on the bench for most of the final quarter before being fielded in with 3:20 left.

Sumang, who hit several big shots for UE in Season 76, had the ball in his hands in their final possession, but his lay-up hit the side of the ring and NU center Alfred Aroga was not called for a foul.

The former Mythical Five member covered his face with his hands after the miss and was holding back his tears in the endgame while being consoled by his teammates.

"Sinong 'di iiyak 'pag tatlong beses na kayo natalo?" Sumang later said. "Ako na naman 'yung mali. Short, so akin na naman."

Sumang also said their last possession was already a broken play.

"Broken eh, so di na-execute. Basta quick two points lang. 'Di nag-execute, ang-end up na naman sa akin. 'Di ko alam kung ano gagawin ko," he said.

"Ako ulit 'yung may mali," he stressed.

"Siguro kulang talaga," he also said. "Wala akong nakita after ng play. Siguro open lane na rin, so malaki lang talaga si Aroga kaya hindi ko nakuha."

Sumang was grateful that his teammates consoled him after the contest, and made special mention of RR de Leon, who told the rest of the Red Warriors to protect their star player as he was sure to earn vitriol from social media.

"Kahit sino naman siguro matutuwa doon," he said. "Gusto ko 'yung sinabi ni RR, na sigurado sa social media ako na naman 'yung kawawa. Protektahan natin 'yung teammates natin."

But he also emphasized that he does not care what haters on Twitter will say about him.

"Handa naman ako dun. Wala akong pakialam sa kanila. Kung ano naman 'yung gawin nila sa akin, kung ano man 'yung sabihin nila sa akin, basta ako readly lang ako at maglalaro pa rin for UE," he said.

At the same time, Sumang also stressed that put in the same situation, he would still have asked for the ball.

"Wala, ako pa rin. Kukunin ko pa rin 'yung bola, for sure," he said. "Hindi naman ako natatakot sa ganyang challenge."

"'Di lang talaga binigay ni God 'yung game para sa amin. Sana next game, ibigay," he added.
