Chris Tiu to join PBA

MANILA, Philippines – Local basketball star Chris Tiu is joining the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Annual rookie Draft.

The former Smart Gilas team captain beat the August 3 deadline for the league’s draft, which will take place at the Robinson’s Midtown Manila on August 19.

“Dropped my application at d PBA office this morning,” Tiu said through his Twitter account.

The 5’11” guard decided to continue playing basketball after he was not included in the current Smart Gilas lineup.

Tiu earlier contemplated on pursuing business ventures instead of playing ball. The former Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) player has degrees in Bachelor of Science in Management Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics.

But on Friday, he surprised his fans by tweeting: “Hello PBA :).”

Tiu will be joining other players who have already applied for the draft, including 6’9” Cebuano Junmar Fajardo, San Sebastian’s Calvin Abueva and Vic Manuel, one-time national player Aldrech Ramos, and Filipino-foreign players Chris Ellis, Cliff Hodge, Jason Deutchman, Charles Keith Jensen, and Alex Mallari.
