Blazers shoot down Pirates in NCAA clash
MANILA -- College of St. Benilde relied on accurate shooting to take down Lyceum, 86-77, in the 90th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City on Saturday.
Juan Paolo Taha went perfect from the field, making 7 out of 7 to finish with a game-high 21 points and help the Blazers snare their fourth straight win after dropping their first 3 games.
They joined Jose Rizal Bombers at No. 4 with a 4-3 win-loss slate.
San Beda is on top of the standings with a 6-1 record, while Arellano University and Perpetual Help follow with a 5-2 and 4-2, respectively.
The Blazers’ team captain Mark Romero got the job done by finishing with 14 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals.
It was the third time in the last four games that the Blazers reached the 80-point plateau. They averaged 83.25 points in the last four outings, catapulting them from the bottom to the upper half of the standings.
"Ang ganda ng takbo ngayon although we must admit there was a portion in the fourth na medyo naging kampante kami sa bola," said St. Benilde coach Gabby Velasco. "I think we're really playing inspired basketball. We're going to enjoy every game we play, even the practices."
The Pirates fell to their second straight loss and fourth overall. They slid to 6th spot after being in the top four for a while.
