MANILA, Philippines – Ginebra point guard LA Tenorio earned Player of the Week honors after he piloted the Gin Kings to a comfortable victory over the GlobalPort Batang Pier in the 2017 PBA Governors' Cup on Sunday – the first win for the defending champions.
Tenorio fired 29 points built on five three-pointers, towing the Gin Kings to a 124-108 demolition of the Batang Pier.
A two-time Finals MVP, the veteran guard displayed his all-around skills as he also contributed five rebounds and four assists on his way to becoming the second PBA Press Corps Player of the Week in the season-ending conference.
The 33-year-old Tenorio edged NLEX's Kevin Alas – the first Player of the Week for the Governors' Cup. He also beat out other NLEX guards Carlo Lastimosa and Alex Mallari, TNT's Jayson Castro and Troy Rosario, Star's Paul Lee and Ian Sangalang, San Miguel's June Mar Fajardo and Marcio Lassiter, Meralco's Jared Dillinger and Reynel Hugnatan, and his own Ginebra teammate, Greg Slaughter.
Tenorio credited Ginebra's complete frontcourt, led by the fit-again Slaughter and versatile import Justin Brownlee, for making it easier for him to score as they can control the boards.
"Kumpyansa ako, kasi may apat akong malaki sa ilalim," said Tenorio, referring to Slaughter, Brownlee, Japeth Aguilar, and Joe Devance. "Malaking bagay 'yun. I think masyadong naka-focus sa ilalim, kaya nao-open up ang mga guards sa labas."
Though their conquest of GlobalPort was impressive, Tenorio warned that they cannot spend too much time celebrating the victory as they will return to action on Wednesday.
Ginebra faces a reeling Kia Picanto squad that is at 0-3 entering the contest, but the Gin Kings still need to be wary.
"It's going to be a big test for us, kung paano namin masu-sustain 'yung game," said Tenorio.
