MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes on Sunday warned that Calvin Abueva is in danger of losing his spot in the national team's roster after the Alaska forward missed practice for the fourth time.
Abueva was included in Gilas' 12-man line-up for the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon that starts on August 15, but has yet to show up for practice. "The Beast" also missed Alaska's game against Star in the 2017 PBA Governors' Cup last Friday.
"If he doesn't come by tomorrow, we're going to be forced to drop him," Reyes said following Gilas Pilipinas' practice at Upper Deck in Pasig. "We have no other recourse."
Reyes revealed that he has yet to hear from Abueva, despite repeated efforts to contact the player through his mother team.
"Wala pa ring balita eh. Kino-contact through Alaska, through their team manager, pero wala. There’s no news," he said.
Abueva's absence is another blow to the national team, which is already short on preparation ahead of the FIBA Asia Cup.
On Sunday, only seven of the 12 players bound for the FIBA Asia Cup showed up, while eight members of the Southeast Asian Games squad practiced.
