San Miguel Beer picked up where it left off by easing past a hapless Blackwater club, 118-93, during Saturday’s PBA Governors’ Cup at Ynares Center in Antipolo.
Led by import Wendel McKines and Marcio Lassiter, the Beermen came off a long break after their Commissioner’s Cup title win, but showed no hint of rust against the Elite.
McKines and Lassiter combined for 38 points and got able backing from the trio of June Mar Fajardo, Gabby Espinas and Arwind Santos.
Fajardo tallied 18 points and 8 rebounds, while Espinas and Santos had 16 markers and 12, respectively.
“Despite na mahaba ang ibinigay kong break sa kanila, ‘yung iba nag-extend pa ng vacation nila when they got back, nandoon pa rin ang sharpness e,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria.
It has been typical for the Beermen to go through championship hangover at the start of the conference.
But San Miguel decided to write a different story this time around.
"This is our best start since... we were coming from a championship eh. After championships usually nag-iistruggle ang team namin," said Austria.
Blackwater got 18 points from Michael Digregorio and 14 each from Poy Erram and Roi Sumang.
The Elite hasn't won a game in 3 starts.
