MANILA, Philippines – The WBO welterweight title bout between Manny Pacquiao and Chris Algieri may open a new opportunity for Juan Manuel Marquez.
WBO president Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel told ESPN Deportes that Algieri will be forced to vacate the WBO junior welterweight crown if he beats the Filipino superstar.
"And you are also close to announcing the fight in November. That could make a vacancy at 140 pounds and we have to see if we allow [Algieri] to rise as champion. Once you climb weight, your reign is over,” said Valcarcel.
Algieri, who won the WBO junior middleweight crown by beating Ruslan Provodnikov, is scheduled for a November 23 clash against Pacquiao.
If he vacates the WBO junior welterweight crown, Varcarcel said it will be up for grabs.
This could open up an opportunity for Marquez, who vacated the title when he challenged Timothy Bradley for the welterweight belt.
Marquez is considered the No. 1 welterweight contender after defeating Mike Alvarado in a welterweight title eliminator.
Other contenders for the junior welterweight belt are Lucas Matthysse and Provodnikov.
