UE blasts Ateneo in boys' volleyball

MANILA, Philippines – The University of the East (UE) opened its bid for an 11th straight UAAP boys volleyball crown in style by beating Ateneo, 25-12, 25-17, and 25-14 at the Adamson Gym last weekend.

With Ron Medalla and Ruvince Abrot leading the way, the Junior Warriors banked on their superior attacking game and blocking to notch their first win of the tournament.

University of Santo Tomas (UST) took the early lead with a 2-0 slate after beating La Salle Zobel, 25-15, 25-22 and 25-22 on Saturday, and edging tournament newcomer Far Eastern University (FEU)-Diliman, 17-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-16 and 15-10, yesterday.

Last year's runner-up National University (NU) also had a winning start when they spoiled FEU-Diliman's debut last Saturday, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15 and 25-15.

La Salle Zobel bounced back from its opening day loss to UST by downing UP Integrated School (UPIS), 25-22, 25-17, 26-24 for a 1-1 record alongside Ateneo.

The Baby Tamaraws and the Junior Maroons fell to 0-2.

In girls play on Saturday, last year's runner-up NU clipped first time participant FEU-Diliman, 25-16, 25-23, and 25-10, while Season 75 champion La Salle-Zobel whipped UPIS, 25-14, 25-14, and 25-12.

UE, meanwhile, edged Adamson, 25-19, 25-23, 14-25, 14-25, and 15-13.

Adamson rebounded from its opening day loss by beating UPIS, 25-14, 25-14, and 25-19 yesterday for a 1-1 record.
