Arellano's Jalalon named NCAA Player of the Week
MANILA, Philippines – Arellano University guard Jiovani Jalalon was named the NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week after helping his team rise to solo second place in the NCAA Season 90 men's basketball tournament.
Jalalon, a rookie transferee from Informatics College, toyed with a triple-double performance before finishing with 16 points, seven assists and six rebounds in propelling the Chiefs to a 97-85 victory over Perpetual Help last Saturday.
The win sent Arellano to solo second with a 5-1 (win-loss) record, just half a game behind unbeaten four-peat champion San Beda College (5-0).
Arellano coach Jerry Codinera was impressed with Jalalon's performance, calling the player a "super-sub."
"I knew that he was going to make a big impact off the bench," said Codinera. "I didn't expect he'll transform into a super-sub and I'm happy he did."
Jalalon is now averaging 12.67 points, a league-best 6.67 assists, 5.83 rebounds and a league-high 3.5 steals in six games.
Jalalon bested teammates John Pinto and Keith Agovida for the weekly award sponsored by ACCEL Quantum and 3XVI and backed by Mighty Mom anti-bacteria dishwashing liquid, Dr. J rubbing alcohol and Bactegel hand sanitizer.
