MANILA, Philippines – Former Smart Gilas Pilipinas stalwart Chris Tiu has yet to decide whether to continue playing ball or focus on his business ventures, but is leaning toward the former.
Tiu, who has not been included in the first team of Smart Gilas 2 program, is thinking of joining the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
“It’s now or never. If I don’t join the PBA draft this year, that’s it for me,” Tiu told The Philippine Star.
On the other hand, the former Gilas team captain is also considering putting his Ateneo degrees to good use.
Tiu has degrees in Bachelor of Science in Management Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics.
The former Ateneo star player is involved in the food and beverage businesses.
“I also want to really immerse myself more in business whether with my family or by myself. If I play basketball for a few years, I’d definitely be left behind in terms of learning and experience [in business],” said Tiu.
But Tiu said it would be hard to leave the sport, and that he feels he owes it to his fans to continue.
“I’d feel very guilty if I turn my back on the game at this point when people want to see me play, appreciate what I can do on the court and my ability to inspire the youth to study hard and get into sports.”
“Right now, it’s 60-40 in favor of basketball for me but I’m still deciding. By Wednesday next week, I shall be making my decision,” said Tiu. – with a report from The Philippine Star
