MANILA – National University (NU) succeeded in limiting star player Kiefer Ravena on Saturday to deal Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) its first defeat, 64-60, in today's main game of Season 77 UAAP men’s basketball tournament.

Ravena, who had 19 points against University of the Philippines, was held to 13 points. In contrast, Troy Rosario and Rev Diputado led the Bulldogs’ balanced scoring with 16 and 10, respectively.

NU and Ateneo figured in a tight contest at the end of the first quarter, 15-all, before the Blue Eagles gained the upperhand, 21-17, midway the second stanza.

The Bulldogs momentarily took the lead, 23-22, but a series of plays capped by Arvin Tolentino’s triple put Ateneo 2 points ahead, 27-25. NU then closed the half with a 6-4 blitz that gave them the lead, 33-31.

Tolentino again rained triples for Ateneo in the third, but the troika of Glenn Khobuntin, Alfred Aroga and Rev Diputado dominated the shaded lane to give NU a 49-43 advantage going to the fourth canto.

Ponso Gotladera and Nico Elorde pulled the Eagles within 56-57, with barely two minutes to go. The Bulldogs, however, were able to close out Ateneo by sinking most of their free throws near the end of regulation.

NU improved its record to 3-1, while Ateneo got its first defeat in four games.
