MANILA, Philippines – Boxers Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico and Amir Khan of Britain, who are both coming off losses, may return to the ring this December, according to their promoter, Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy.

Speaking with Boxing Scene, Schaefer said he is talking with Cotto’s representatives as they are planning to work together to promote the Puerto Rican’s ring return.

Cotto is planning to fight again on December 1 at the Madison Square Garden. He is coming off a loss to unbeaten boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. in an entertaining, competitive bout last May 5 in Las Vegas.

“We are going to continue working together. We have a great relationship with them,” said Schaefer. “Miguel Cotto is a really great fighter and our two companies work very well.”

Schaefer is optimistic that Golden Boy and Cotto’s company, Miguel Cotto Promotions, will once again team up to promote the boxer’s December fight.

“We’ve co-promoted a number of different fights together and we do some events with them in Puerto Rico as well... We have a great working relationship,” he said.

Khan, meanwhile, will return to the ring on December 15, though the venue and his opponent has not been finalized yet.

Khan is coming off a devastating loss against Danny Garcia last July 14, which saw him get knocked out in the fourth round after dominating the first two rounds.

The British boxer has lobbied for a December rematch with Garcia, but Garcia is reportedly going to fight Mexican legend Erik Morales on October 20 in a rematch.

Schaefer said they still have to work on determining who Khan’s opponent will be.

“We’ll have to see what opportunities are. There are so many exciting match-ups in these weight classes,” Schaefer said in a separate Boxing Scene interview.

“I would certainly appreciate and understand that Amir is going to want to have a rematch, and I’m sure a rematch is going to happen,” he added.

But if Morales beats Garcia, Schaefer said the logical thing to do is to book a rematch between the two fighters.
