MANILA, Philippines – Talk 'N Text guard Larry Fonacier has begged off the national basketball team pool due to an assortment of injuries, Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes revealed on Thursday.

In a statement, Reyes said they accept "with deep sadness" Fonacier's request to beg off the Gilas pool.

"Unknown to many, Larry has been playing through a variety of foot and back injuries that have bothered him the past two years," Reyes said. "It is only his great dedication that has prevented him from taking any time off."

"However, the rigors of playing almost non-stop in the PBA and the national team for the past three years has taken its toll, leaving Larry with no recourse but to accede to his doctors' orders for complete rest and rehabilitation," he added.

"We will definitely miss Larry's quiet leadership and unyielding heart."

Fonacier was a member of the national team that finished with the silver medal in last year's FIBA Asia Championship, and his marksmanship from beyond the arc will definitely be missed by a Gilas team that relies tremendously on its outside shooting.

Gilas is set to compete in the FIBA World Cup in Spain starting on August 30. The team will hold a training camp in Miami next week to prepare for their campaign, followed by a series of friendly games.
