Hendo to focus on winning rounds vs Jones
MANILA, Philippines – Mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran Dan Henderson said he plans to fight smart against Ultimate Fighting Champion (UFC) light heavyweight king Jone “Bones” Jones.
Henderson, former PRIDE and Strikeforce champion, said his game plan against Jones will be to win every round instead of going for the knockout.
“My focus is to win every round, not to land the ‘H-bomb,’” Henderson said in ESPN. “I’ll make sure I win every round and if I hit him good along the way, hopefully it knocks him out.”
Despite being a massive underdog against the younger and taller Jones, the 41-year-old Henderson is confident that he could take away the champion’s belt.
“I’ll never go into a fight or accept a fight if I didn’t think I could beat the other guy up,” Henderson said.
He said the 25-year-old champion still has a lot to learn despite his reputation as an unorthodox fighter.
Henderson will fight Jones at the main event of UFC 151, slated on September 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Henderson added that Jones has never fought anyone like him.
“He’s young and sloppy a little bit,” Henderson said. “He still has a lot to learn, technically.”
“He’s done well with his style but I feel like he’s never fought anybody like me. [My style] really goes well against someone like him.”
