MANILA, Philippines – Filipino lightweight prospect Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta said he is flattered to be compared to boxing superstar and fellow Filipino Manny Pacquiao.
Gesta, unbeaten in 25 bouts, is a southpaw just like the eight-division champion.
“I take it as a compliment,” he said in Boxing Scene.
He also credited Pacquiao for opening the doors for Filipino boxers.
But Gesta, who fights Ty Barnett on August 3, said there could only be one Pacquiao.
“He’s a legend and I’m just trying to be me, make my own name to make my family and country proud,” said the Cebu-born fighter.
Meanwhile, Gesta said he plans to stick to their game plan when he fights Barnett in Las Vegas.
He added that he remains unfazed despite Barnett’s trash talk.
“I don’t really know too much about Barnett, I’ve watched some footage but I leave that to Vince [Parra, manager] and my dad,” said Gesta.
“They watch the tapes and we make a plan. I know he doesn’t respect me and that’s enough for me. I'll be ready come August 3.”
Gesta said he hopes to win a world title in the 135-pound division before climbing his way to the junior welterweight division.
