MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine’s Jeffrei Chan has been named the PBA Player of the Week for the period of July 16 to 22 after towing the Elasto Painters’ to their first ever Finals appearance as a franchise.
Chan scored 25 points in the Elasto Painters’ 92-82 win over B-Meg last Wednesday, giving them the first Finals berth in the PBA Governors Cup.
Chan scored 10 points in the second period to help the E-Painters establish control, and added seven markers in the payoff period to help hold off the Llamados.
But Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao told PBA.ph that Chan must be commended for his all-around performance and not just his scoring totals.
“If we are to look at him now, it should be wholistically. The reason he is more successful now is because he has molded his all-around game. He can defend, pass and rebound, too,” Guiao said.
Chan has averaged 14.4 points per game in the PBA Governors Cup, a massive improvement for a player who has never scored over 10 points per game in a season before.
Guiao said Chan’s ability to snipe from beyond the arc allows the Elasto Painters to be more effective in their offense.
“There’s his three-point shooting, so hindi siya pwedeng iwanan. The defense has to extend and that enables us to operate a lot better. That opens up the driving and passing lanes for us and more options for our post players,” Guiao said.
“Whether he is scoring or not, he has been consistently contributing to our success so far,” the coach added.
Rain or Shine has a 1-0 series lead over the Llamados in the best-of-seven Finals after they won Game 1, 91-80, last Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Game 2 is set for Wednesday also at the Araneta Coliseum.
