MANILA, Philippines – Five players are contesting the PBA Governors Cup Best Player of the Conference award in what is shaping up to be a wide-open race.
Mark Caguioa of Barangay Ginebra finished the conference with the highest number of statistical points (SPs) with 449, followed by B-Meg’s James Yap (392) and Powerade’s Gary David (363).
But in terms of average SPs, it is David who is leading the charge with 33.00 per game, followed by Caguioa with 29.93 SPs per game.
B-Meg’s Marc Pingris is third with 27.69 SPs per game, followed by teammate Yap (26.1 SPs per game) and Rain or Shine rookie Paul Lee(26.08 SPs) per game.
According to PBA.ph, David, Caguioa, Pingris, Yap and Lee will be the official candidates for the Best Player of the Conference plum.
The award will be handed out on Wednesday, prior to Game Two of the best-of-seven Finals between B-Meg and Rain or Shine.
David and Caguioa are also candidates for the season’s Most Valuable Player award. David won the Best Player crown in the Philippine Cup, while Caguioa took the honors in the Commissioners Cup.
David led all locals in scoring in the Govenors Cup with 24.8 points per game on top of 3.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists. The Tigers, however, did not make the playoffs.
Caguioa, meanwhile, averaged 17.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Pingris nearly averaged a double-double for the conference with 9.6 points and 9.1 rebounds, while Yap had numbers of 14.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists per contest.
Among imports, B-Meg’s Marcus Blakely led the way with 50.7 SPs per outing. Meralco’s Mario West followed with a 46.55 average.
