Three teams share top spot in UAAP women's hoops

MANILA, Philippines – Defending champions De La Salle University and last season's runner-up National University (NU) both claimed their second straight victory, while Ateneo remains unbeaten to forge a three-way tie for the lead in the UAAP Season 77 women's basketball tournament.

Camille Claro and Ana Castillo combined for 16 points as the Lady Archers defeated Adamson, 50-42, last weekend at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs edged the University of Santo Tomas (UST), 62-60, behind a 15-point effort from Trixie Antiquiera.

Danica Jose churned out double-double figures of 22 points and 13 rebounds to tow the Lady Eagles past Far Eastern University (FEU), 58-55. Ateneo is now 2-0 under new coach Erika Dy.

In the other women's game, Ruthlaine Tacula scored 16 points to lead the University of the East (UE) past the University of the Philippines (UP), 58-47, and barge into the win column.

The Lady Warriors moved into a tie with the Lady Tamaraws with identical 1-1 win-loss records, while the Lady Falcons, the Tigresses and the Lady Maroons are mired at the bottom of the league standings with 0-2 records.

Meanwhile, the UAAP high school volleyball tournament will open on Saturday, according to event host Adamson University.

The competitions in the girls and boys divisions were originally scheduled to begin last week but were called off due to the unavailability of the Adamson Gym.

Action in the girls' division begins with La Salle-Zobel taking on UP Integrated School at 12:30 p.m., followed by the showdown between last season's runner-up, NU, and tournament-debutante FEU-Diliman at 2:00 p.m. The Adamson-UE duel will follow at 3 p.m.

In the boys' division, Ateneo and UPIS will collide at 8:00 a.m, while first-time participants FEU-Diliman kick off their campaign against NU at 9:30 a.m. La Salle-Zobel and UST will clash at 11:00 a.m

Reigning girls champion UST and boys champion UE drew opening day byes and will begin their campaign on Sunday.
