MANILA – De La Salle’s Arnold Van Opstal denied that he deliberately hurt Ateneo’s Fonzo Gotladera when their teams battled it out at the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s basketball tournament last Sunday.
UAAP commissioner Andy Jao has summoned the 6’9” Green Archer to explain accusations that he allegedly he threw a punch at the back of Gotladera’s head while jockeying for positions in the first quarter of the game.
According to Reuben Terrado’s Spin.ph report, Van Opstal will be meeting Jao before La Salle’s game against National University at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
But Van Opstal refuted the allegations, pointing out that he even greeted the Atenean after the Blue Eagles won the game, 97-86.
Gotladera, who outscored Van Opstal, 17-10, used to play for La Salle before moving to Ateneo.
He spent a year’s residency as a Blue Eagle before eventually playing in the 77th UAAP Season.
