MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines now has a new world champion in boxing.
Filipino boxer Johnriel Casimero was declared by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) as the new world junior flyweight champion after Ulises Solis was found to be unfit to defend the crown.
According to a Philboxing report by Ronnie Nathanielsz, Solis will need to undergo surgery for his jaw injury, which means he will be unable to defend the title by October 30.
“It is the IBF’s determination that Solis will be unable to defend the IBF Jr. Flyweight Title on or before October 30, 2012. Therefore, effective immediately the IBF declares that Johnriel Casimero the new IBF Jr. Flyweight Champion,” said IBF Championship Committee chairman Lindsey Tucker.
Casimero became the IBF interim junior flyweight champion last February by halting Argentina’s Luis Lazarte in a bout marred by an ugly post-fight riot.
Angry Argentine fans attacked Casimero’s team after seeing their hometown hero defeated.
Lazarte was suspended for allegedly instigating the riot.
