MANILA, Philippines – Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. has sent his apologies for UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey after mistakenly addressing her as a man.

Mayweather, who is set for a rematch with Marcos Maidana in September, also congratulated Rousey for being named as ESPY's 2014 Female Athlete of the Year.

“I congratulate her. I didn't know who she was,” Mayweather said on Fight Hub.tv while addressing the boxing media.

The boxer mistook Rousey for a man after a boxing scribe ask him if he is willing to take on the UFC fighter in a match. “I don’t even know who he is,” was his reply.

Mayweather later asked for forgiveness, saying he does not follow MMA.

“I apologize, I didn't know [her] because I'm used to watching football, basketball,” he said.

Mayweather also hinted that his outfit, Mayweather Promotions, will try its hand in managing MMA fighters.

“We are the past, the present and future of sports entertainment and yes we will be involved with other contact sports in the future,” he said.
