MANILA, Philippines – The promoter of Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez is still waiting for Filipino boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao to make a decision regarding his next fight, which will most likely be held this November.
Speaking with PhilBoxing, Marquez’s manager Fernando Beltran said, “We are waiting for Manny Pacquiao, because Manny Pacquiao is coming back and he is going to decide if he is going to fight Marquez, or if he fights (Timothy) Bradley.”
Pacquiao defeated Marquez last November 2011 via a controversial majority decision. It was their third bout and like the previous two, the fight was highly competitive and the result generated controversy. Many felt Marquez had done enough to merit the win.
Last June 9, Pacquiao fought the unbeaten Bradley and was stunned when the American was announced the winner via split decision. It was even more controversial than his fight against Marquez and prompted an investigation by the Nevada State Attorney General.
According to Beltran, Pacquiao should choose to fight Marquez rather than Bradley, even if both fights were controversial.
“Honestly, Pacquiao and Marquez was a close fight. The other one was not even a close fight,” Beltran said.
“This is what the people want to see and who the people want to see him rematch with. Everybody thought Marquez won, or at least, it is even,” he added.
“The media was 70% Marquez, 30% Pacquiao.”
Beltran said that while he was not impressed with Pacquiao’s performance against Bradley, he believes the Filipino boxer was the rightful winner.
The Mexican promoter also said that “if Pacquiao wants to prove that he is still at the highest level, he needs to fight Marquez.”
But Beltran remained respectful, calling the Sarangani Representative “a sensational person.”
“We respect him a lot. I consider myself his friend, and I really like him and I wish him the best. I hope he decides to fight Marquez. I think he is going to sell a lot of pay-per-view,” he said.
