MANILA – New KIA Motors coach and boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao will be forced to skip the PBA dispersal draft scheduled on Friday.
PBA media bureau officer Willie Marcial said the 8-division champion has to attend to his ailing wife, Sarangani Vice Gov. Jinkee Pacquiao, who recently gave birth to their fifth child, Israel.
“Hindi makaka-attend si Manny. Kailangan niya kasi bantayan misisi niya, may sakit daw,” Marcial told Solar Sports’ Snow Badua.
“Hindi sinabi kung ano ang sakit ni Jinkee pero mukhang nabinat daw.”
Columbian Autocar Corp.’s Kia Motors and Ever Bilena’s Blackwater Sports will participate in the dispersal draft set on Friday at the PBA office in Libis.
Pacquiao was supposed to represent KIA Motors in the selections, but since he won’t be available, deputy coach Glen Capacio will oversee the draft proceedings for the team.
The draft will allow the expansion teams to acquire players from other teams for the 2014–15 season.
A "protect 12" scheme will be implemented for the draft, which means that the 10 existing PBA teams can protect up to 12 players in their line-up and will unconditionally release their "unprotected players" to the expansion pool.
This will be the first expansion draft held by the PBA since 2000 when Batang Red Bull Energizers joined the PBA as an expansion team.
