MANILA – Filipino-Swiss midfielder Martin Steuble, who saw action for the Philippine Azkals in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup, has been signed by Major League Soccer (MLS) team Sporting Kansas City.
"I am really excited to join Sporting KC," Steuble said in a report on the team's website. "I was there for a trial and loved what I saw."
"I felt good from the beginning, and am honored that they offered me a contract. The team is doing very well right now, and I'm just going to do whatever I can to help," he added.
Steuble last played for FC Wil 1900 in the Swiss Challenge League, where he featured 52 times and scored three goals. Prior to that, he played for FC Wohlen, scoring four times in 29 appearances.
Steuble has been capped nine times by the Philippine national football team and scored his first international goal in the Azkals' 3-0 win against Nepal in a friendly last April.
Aside from Steuble, Sporting KC also signed Honduran midfielder Jorge Claros.
"We are always looking for players to enhance our roster. Not only is the quality of Jorge and Martin high, but obviously with the injuries and things we have dealt with this season, adding them will be a great benefit in the second half of the season," said Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes.
Among those who congratulated Steuble on his signing was Philippine Azkals goal-keeper Neil Etheridge, who called it an "amazing move."
