MANILA -- The Philippine Azkals improved a notch in the latest FIFA men's football ranking following their second place finish in the AFC Challenge Cup last May.
Based on the latest update in the FIFA list, the Philippines is now at the 128th spot, just behind Kazakhstan and ahead of Afghanistan and Vietnam.
The Azkals are also ranked the highest among the Southeast Asian countries.
Other football powerhouses in the Southeast asian region are Vietnam (No. 129), Malaysia (No. 151), Indonesia (No. 153) and Singapore (No. 154).
The last time the Azkals reached the top spot in ASEAN was in October 2013 after ruling the Philippine Peace Cup in Bacolod.
The Azkals suffered a heartbreaking second-place finish in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup, which saw them lose to Palestine, 1-0, in the final.
Their next major tournament will be the the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup which will take place this November.
