MANILA, Philippines – Top Rank’s Bob Arum bares his reason for pushing a potential bout between eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao and boxing’s newest upstart Chris Algieri.
The boxing promoter believes the fight could turn out to be a good sell because of an interesting storyline between the two boxers.
“He’s definitely an option because there’s a great storyline,” Arum told Keith Idec of Boxing Scene, referring to Algieri. “You know, a college kid who has a masters degree [from New York Institute of Technology], a superb boxer, speaks well.”
Algieri became one of the top candidates for Pacquiao’s Macau fight in November 23 after he pulled off a surprising upset against Siberian Rocky Ruslan Provodnikov last month.
“He has all the elements to make an interesting match for Manny Pacquiao both inside and outside the ring. So sure, we’re considering it.”
Idec, meanwhile, said that Algieri is turning out to be the more viable opponent for the Filipino boxer from the financial standpoint.
He cited that Brandon Rios received $4 million for his one-sided defeat to Pacquiao in Macau last November. Algieri, on the other hand, received a career-high of $250,000 for the WBO junior welterweight title fight against Provodnikov.
