Wesley So settles for 3rd in World Chess Open

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So settled for 3rd overall in the 40th Annual World Chess Open Championship which took place at the Sheraton City Center Hotel in Philadelphia.

The Cavite-based So tallied 6.5 points on 4 wins, 5 draws, but nabbed 3rd place due to a superior tie-break over GMs Giorgi Kacheishvili, Aleksander Lenderman, Alexander Evdokimov, Ray Robson, Yuri Shulman and Mark Tyler Arnold.

So was held to a draw by Shulman in the final round.

GM Ivan Sokolov of the Netherlands defeated fellow 7-pointer GM Alexander Shabalov in the tie-break match en route to the coveted chess title.

The competition ran from July 2 to 8.

So is backed by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). – By Marlon Bernardino
