MANILA, Philippines – Fight fans picked Cuba’s Guillermo Rigondeaux as the next opponent of World Boxing Organization (WBO) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) 122-pound king Nonito Donaire Jr.
In a poll conducted by RingTV, Rigondeaux, the World Boxing Association (WBA) title holder, came out on top among 5 candidates presented.
The Cuban defector garnered 37.5% of the more than 8,000 votes.
World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion Abner Mares of Mexico came in 2nd with 30.1% of the votes.
WBC emeritus champion Toshiaki Nishioka was voted 3rd (17.6%), followed by Jorge Arce (12.1%) and Anselmo Moreno (2.6%).
Boxing promoter Bob Arum said he is already finalizing the details of the Donaire-Arce fight, which could take place in October.
“He’s going to fight Arce, because that’s what everybody wants; the fans, the Mexican fans,” Arum said in Examiner.
