MANILA, Philippines – Boxing promoter Bob Arum is eyeing the Staples Center, home of the Los Angeles Lakers, as the venue for the planned between Nonito Donaire Jr. and Mexico’s Jorge Arce in October.
Arum told Boxing Scene’s Ronnie Nathanielsz that the fight is already close to being done and that the Staples Center looks to be a suitable venue.
The $523 million-Staples Center has a seating capacity of 21,000. The arena is home to the LA Lakers and the LA Clippers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
“It’s not easy to clear a date but that’s the first choice. They are working on clearing a Saturday date for us in October,” said Arum.
Donaire has recently defeated South Africa’s Jeffrey Mathebula to unify the World Boxing Organization and International Boxing Federation super bantamweight title.
Arce, meanwhile is coming off a controversial fight against Puerto Rico’s Jesus Rojas last month.
The bout was declared a “no contest” after Arce was unable to continue to fight following Rojas’ low blow in the second round.
