CALIFORNIA – Sporting a new haircut to represent both the Philippines and his adopted home of San Diego, California, Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta and his opponent Jorge Pimentel tipped the scales Friday afternoon in preparation for the much-anticipated debut of the undefeated Cebuano fighter.
The 23-year-old Gesta weighed in at 137.2 pounds.
The 31-year-old Mexican boxer Pimentel was a last-minute substitute, after original opponent Francisco Lorenzo had visa problems.
Pimentel has a record of 23 wins and 11 losses.
"It's going to be a good fight and I'm ready," said Pimentel.
Gesta will spend the night rehydrating and getting a much-needed rest after intense sparring sessions with World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight champion Amir Khan.
Gesta also trained with pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao’s coach Freddie Roach.
Gesta’s Saturday night Top Rank debut will be held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California as the undercard match for the WBA title match between lightweight champion Brandon Rios and Pacquiao sparring mate Urbano Antillon.
With Top Rank planning to give Gesta a title shot soon, Gesta is expected to closely monitor the Rios-Urbano bout.
Gesta’s title shot may come against the winner of that championship fight. -- Report from Steve Angeles, ABS-CBN North America Bureau
