CALIFORNIA - The height difference was obvious as “The Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire Jr. and his opponent Jeffrey “The Marvelous Mongoose” Mathebula, weighed in on the eve of their 122-pound title unification fight.
Donaire weighed in at 121.4 pounds while Mathebula weighed in at 121.8 pounds.
But the 5’11 South African stands 5 inches taller than Donaire, who is listed at 5’ 6”.
“Nakakatuwa. Ako kasi, sabi ko, tangkad ito but ang nasa isip ko, I'm going to have fun with this fight, because this is the first time na mas matankad yung kalaban ko. So for me, sa sarili ko, ito ang biggest challenge,” said Donaire.
This is the first time Mathebula, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion, will fight in North America. The former Olympian walked into the official weigh in confident that his smarts, speed, and size will be his advantage against the Filipino flash.
“I'm confident because I'm going to deliver the goods. I'm going to win Saturday,” he said.
It was a packed house at the weigh-in. Among the crowd was former World Champion and former Manny Pacquiao opponent, Marco Antonio Barrera, who will be doing Spanish commentary for the fight.
“It's a tough fight for Nonito Donaire but all the people know he's the next Manny Pacquiao, a little Manny Pacquiao. I think Nonito Donaire comes to win,” said Barrera.
The fight will take place at the Home Depot Center in Carson, and is expected to have a large Filipino turnout.
The Donaire-Mathebula fight card will be aired by ABS-CBN Channel 2 on Sunday starting 10 a.m.
