MANILA, Philippines – Japanese champion Toshiaki Nishioka will reportedly be at ringside to watch Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire take on Jeffrey Mathebula of South Africa in a bout to unify the IBF and WBO super bantamweight championships.
Nishioka, who holds the WBC super bantamweight belt, is another potential foe for Donaire.
“I will be watching and studying Donaire’s fight very closely at ringside,” Nishioka said, according to a report from Dennis Guillermo of Examiner.
“I believe that the fight with me and Donaire will happen this year,” he added.
Nishioka said he expects Donaire to be victorious, which is why he plans to challenge the Filipino boxer to a fight following the match.
“I expect him to win the fight on Saturday, then right after the fight or at the post-presscon or in the dressing room, I will congratulate him and tell him to fight me next,” Nishioka said.
Donaire has said that he wants to fight Nishioka, who is rated as The RING Magazine’s No. 1 super bantamweight, although fights against Guillermo Rigondeaux and Abner Mares are also possible.
