MANILA, Philippines – Angel Garcia, the father of unbeaten boxer and WBC champion Danny Garcia, continues to engage in trash talk ahead of his son’s junior welterweight clash against British fighter Amir “King” Khan.
This time, the elder Garcia is targeting Khan’s trainer, Hall-of-Famer Freddie Roach.
“(Roach) don’t intimidate me,” Garcia told Boxing Scene. “He’s a man like me. You know how he got there, like I’m getting there, by making champions.”
Garcia said that many of Roach’s fighters were already championship-caliber fighters even before he got to train them.
“(Julio Cesar) Chavez Jr. was already done. Manny Pacquiao, he took him from a left-handed (fighter) and he gave him a jab. Come on, man. That’s all he done,” Garcia said.
“Show me that you’re a real coach. Train a little kid from 10 years old to be a world champion, and then you tell me that you’re a real coach,” he challenged.
Garcia further claimed that Khan is “hiding behind Roach.”
“He got knocked out in Europe. He came here and lost to (Lamont) Peterson, and he blamed it on some other stuff. He’s hiding behind Roach, because Roach gave him the image,” he said.
Garcia’s son, Danny, will face Khan for the WBC and the WBA junior welterweight championships this July 14 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
