MANILA, Philippines – AMA Online Education eked out a huge 67-66 victory over Gamboa Coffee Mix for its breakthrough victory in the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup on Tuesday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Mario Bonleon drained the go-ahead free throw for the Titans with 8.3 seconds to go, after getting fouled by Leo Avenido in the inbounds play.
The Coffee Lovers then wasted a golden opportunity to steal the game after JR Cawaling threw an errant pass to Mark Montuano, which was stolen by Daniel Salonga to seal AMA's maiden win of the conference.
"Napakasarap," said AMA coach Mark Herrera. "'Yung tinalo namin, puro ex-pro at sabi nga ng mga players ko, idol nila ang mga 'yan."
"Pero sabi ko, basketball ito, at kailangna muna nila i-set aside 'yung mga iniisip nila na 'yun," he added.
Bonleon scored 16 points on 6-of-17 shooting from the field, while also contributing three rebounds. Jaycee Asuncion, meanwhile, tallied 14 points, five boards, and two assists.
Andre Paras had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Renzo Subido contributed 11 points and five assists.
The Titans halted their five-game losing streak to improve to 1-5, while also sending Gamboa Coffee Mix to their fifth straight loss.
Avenido showed the way for Gamboa (1-5) with 15 points and five boards, while Montuano contributed 11 points and 13 rebounds.
