MANILA, Philippines – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones was honored to hear middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva’s comments regarding a super-fight between them.
Silva, the long-time UFC middleweight champion, admitted earlier this week that he is unlikely to defeat Jones should they ever meet in a “super fight” inside the Octagon.
“Jon Jones, in his class, is the best. If I fight Jon Jones, I don’t think I’m going to win,” Silva said in an MMA Fighting report.
“Jon Jones is different,” Silva added. “He’s large. He’s young. But, in the fight, I see in Jon Jones, I see myself from a long time ago. He’s very smart.”
Silva, who will defend his title against Chris Weidman at UFC 162 this weekend, said his only advantage over Jones was his experience.
On Twitter, Jones responded to Silva’s statement, saying: “Honored to hear the statements Silva made regarding a super fight (against) me earlier today. Doesn’t change much, I’m still working hard.”
When asked by a fan if he thinks Silva is playing mind games, Jones reiterated: “Doesn’t matter, I’m still working hard.”
When a fan asked point blank if he can beat Silva, Jones answered: “I believe I am gifted and hard-working enough to pull out the victory against anyone.”
Silva later clarified his statement in an appearance on “UFC Tonight,” stressing that he is not scared to fight Jones – or anyone, for that matter.
“My opinion is this: I’ll fight Jon Jones, all the guys from my class, all the guys that work in the UFC,” Silva said, as quoted by MMA Mania. “I respect Jon Jones. I respect Chris Weidman, but I’m here for working.”
“I’m not scared of Jon Jones, of Chris Weidman or whoever. I‘m here to fight. That’s it. It’s simple,” he added.
