MANILA, Philippines – Powerade head coach Bo Perasol is a serious candidate to replace Norman Black as head coach of the defending UAAP champions Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles, according to a report from Joaquin Henson of the Philippine Star.
Black, who has led the Blue Eagles to four straight UAAP titles, is set to leave Ateneo at the end of this season. He will replace Chot Reyes at the bench of the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters, while Reyes will be the head coach of the Smart Gilas Pilipinas National Team.
Henson reported that Perasol was offered "a four-year Ateneo contract with an escalating salary starting at P310,000 monthly."
Perasol’s Tigers yesterday stayed alive in the hunt for the last PBA Governors Cup semi-finals berth with a 99-95 victory over the Barako Bull Energy.
He told Henson that "nothing is definite" as far as the Ateneo head coaching job is concerned.
"All I know about Powerade is only what I read in the newspapers. I haven't talked to Mikee (Romero) yet. Nothing is actually definite. All talks are just what ifs," Perasol said.
"As for Ateneo, I haven't gone into the details of the offer as I am really in full focus on Powerade's campaign."
Perasol stressed that it would be "unfair" to the Powerade players if he divides his attention at such a crucial point in their season.
Perasol led the Tigers to a Finals berth in the PBA Philippine Cup, losing to Talk 'N Text in five games.
The UAAP Season 74 men’s basketball tournament starts on July 14 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
