MANILA, Philippines -- Smart-Gilas Pilipinas crushed Singapore, 98-56, in the SEABA qualifying tournament for the FIBA Asia Cup in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Naturalized Filipino Marcus Douthit scored 21 points for the nationals, who led as much as 25 points over the Singaporeans.
Former Ateneo stalwart Chris Tiu added 18 points, while Aldrech Ramos and Garvo Lanete each scored 11.
Gilas immediately overpowered Singapore in the first quarter as Douthit sparked a 22-12 exchange in the first quarter.
The Filipinos widened the gap to 25 in the second quarter with halftime scores of 45-20.
M. Folkoff and H. Ng of Singapore launch a third quarter fightback to chop Gilas’ lead to 74-43.
But the nationals’ lead proved to be insurmountable for the Singaporeans as Gilas went on to nab their first win.
Gilas will take on Indonesia on Thursday.
