MANILA – Pool masters Marlon Manalo, Antonio Gabica and Jeffrey de Luna defeated their respective rivals to make it into the last 32 along two other Filipino billiard players in the on-going 2009 Qatar International 9-ball Pool Championship at the Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation in Doha.
A report by BilliardPhilippines.com said Manalo nipped compatriot Elvis Calasang while Gabica bested Jeong Young Hwa of Korea. De Luna trounced Taher Hossain of Qatar.
Meanwhile, Israel Rota and Raymond Faraon also made it to the last 32.
Rota thumped fellow Filipino Joven Alba while Faraon beat Hamza Mohd Saeed Ali.
In the last 32, Manalo will meet up with Shane “The South Dakota Kid” Van Boening of the US; Gabica will face Mariusz Skoneczny of Poland; De Luna will square off with Niels Feijen of the Netherlands.
Rota will be opposite Radoslaw Babica of Poland, and Faraon versus Daryl Peach of Great Britain.
The five Filipino survivors had to weather gruelling matches in the loser’s bracket to make the cut in the last 32, employing a single knock-out system.
The winner of the Qatar Open gets the $40,000 top prize money.
