MANILA, Philippines – WBC president Jose Sulaiman was disgusted with how the affairs related to the WBC minimumweight title fight between Chinese champion Xiong Zhao Zhong and Filipino challenger Denver Cuello have been handled.

According to a report by Ronnie Narthanielsz in Philboxing, Sulaiman said he was made to believe that a Chinese television network was involved in the airing of the fight, thereby assuring Cuello’s compensation.

“How wrong I was to allow these things to happen. I was fooled by believing that an important Chinese TV was involved,” he said in an e-mail to Games and Amusements Board boxing division chief Dr. Nasser Cruz.

Sulaiman admitted that the promoter of the fight, which took place in Dubai, never had any business with the WBC before.

“I have been intensely involved to support the fight as I thought that it was good for China's involvement in pro boxing,” he said.

Cuello, who lost to Xiong via a majority decision, has yet to receive full payment of his fight purse from Zack Taumafi’s KO Promotions.

The boxer’s manager said they received $2,500 on Tuesday as the first installment of Cuello’s $24,000 purse, which the promoter promised to settle by the end of July.

Cuello’s purse was originally reported to be $40,000, but was whittled down to $24,000.

Xiong’s manager Liu Gang also said “they themselves likewise were not paid.”

Sulaiman vowed that he will make sure that the promoter will fulfill his obligations.

“I will keep insisting, and we are ready now to declare suspensions and all that is necessary. We will continue enforcing the payment. The WBC never had one situation like this before in its 50 years of existence and we will not accept this matter to die,” he said.
