MANILA, Philippines – Unbeaten Filipino boxer Milan “El Metodico” Melindo is ready to challenge Mexico’s Juan Francisco Estrada for the World Boxing Association and the World Boxing Organization (WBO) flyweight titles.
Estrada claimed the WBA and WBO straps with an upset victory over Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Viloria last April in Macau.
Melindo will try to bring the title belts back to Philippine soil when he takes on Estrada on July 27 at the Venetian in Macau.
Speaking to PhilBoxing, Melindo said he plans to surprise the Mexican champion.
“There are two world titles at stake,” he said. “I am expecting the same style of fighting like what I have encountered in my previous bouts.”
“His pressure fighting style fits my counter-punching strategy, and he will be surprised come fight night,” he added.
Melindo burst into the world title picture after beating Tommy Seran via knockout in the undercard of the Viloria-Estrada fightcard.
His trainer, Edito Villamor, said Melindo has shown a lot of improvement during training camp.
“Melindo has improved a lot in all aspects, especially his timing, physique, stamina, and he has shown tremendous mental preparation for this fight,” Villamor said.
Villamor told PhilBoxing that Melindo is 60-70% ready for the title fight, having sparred over 50 rounds against young Filipino boxers including Johnriel Casimero, Rocky Fuentes and Arthur Villanueva.
