MANILA -- National coach Yeng Guiao said that although Japeth Aguilar needs a bit of improvement, he thinks the potential in the 6’9” player is there.
Aguilar, the son of former Northern Consolidated center Peter Aguilar, saw action on Thursday’s scrimmage between Powerade-Team Pilipinas and the visiting Soldiers for Christ.
“He has a lot of things to improve on but the potential is there,” said Guiao in PBA.ph.
Aguilar scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds, made four blocks and registered a steal against the visitors, which consisted of former collegiate players from the US.
He helped the RP squad post a come-from-behind 100-94 victory over the more physical Soldiers for Christ at The Arena in San Juan.
Guiao said Aguilar needs to get re-acquainted with the local playing style. “Japeth also needs to get used to the local brand of basketball again. Medyo naliligaw pa eh. But I’m pretty satisfied with what I saw,” said the RP team coach.
The Soldiers for Christ team is helping the RP squad prepare for the William Jones Cup in Taipei from July 18-28 and the FIBA Asia World Championship qualifier in Tianjin, China from August 6-16.
