CLARK FREEPORT ZONE – Manila South and Iloilo swept their respective rivals to bag softball crowns at the Little League Asia Pacific Regional Championships at the Clark parade grounds in Angeles City, Pampanga on Wednesday.
The Manila South batters clobbered Indonesia, 17-0, to successfully retain their Big League (14-18-year-old) title in chalking up their third straight win in their best-of-five playoffs in the division where only two squads saw action.
The Manila South girls earlier beat the Guamanians by scores of 11-0 and 6-1, respectively, in the event sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission, Clark Development Corp., Globe, Limitless Possibilities, Inc. and Kentucky Fried Chicken.
They will once again represent the region and the country in the Big League World Series set on August 3-9 in Lower Sussex, Delaware.
Iloilo routed Australia, 14-1, late Tuesday to complete a three-game sweep of its best-of-three playoffs to retain its Little League (11-12-year-old) softball championships and advance to the World Series finals.
The Ilonggo batters earlier trounced the Aussies by scores of 17-0 and 10-0, respectively, and will also represent the region in Little League World Softball Series scheduled on August 10-16 in Kirkland, Washington.
Set to join the two squads is Gawad Smokey Mountain, which dumped Guam, 11-1, to move within a win of securing the Senior League (13-16-year-old) division in softball.
Tricia Tioson and Mary Grace Manalon each drove in a pair of runs in separate innings for their second win in a similar best-of-five series after the Guamanians won over them, 3-1, last Tuesday.
Tioson struck with a double in the bottom of the second inning while Manalon tripled in the fourth, triggering a four-run explosion that virtually wrapped up the match.
The Pinay batters can wrap up the title up when they tangle again on Thursday.
