Cone: San Mig needs to play better in Game 2
MANILA, Philippines – Tim Cone admitted that San Mig Coffee will need to do a better job in Game 2 of their PBA Governors' Cup Finals against Rain or Shine on Thursday.
The Coffee Mixers played catch-up for most part of Game 1 before James Yap saved the day for San Mig Coffee by taking over in the final minutes.
“In many ways we were lucky to escape with Game 1. We were outplayed and outhustled for most of the game and were fortunate to hit a couple of tough shots at the end to pull it out,” said Cone in the PBA website after their 104-101 win over Rain or Shine.
“We’ve got to put together a much better performance if we’re going to get Game 2. Our first group is going to have come out and really set the tone for us,” Cone added.
The Elasto Painters are expected to hit them hard in Game 2 especially after the controversial ending of the series opener.
Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao felt that they were shortchanged in Game 1 when the referees failed to blow the whistle on Marc Pingris, who bumped Paul Lee while the shooting guard was making a 3-point attempt in the final second of the game.
A foul call could have given Lee 3 attempts on the free-throw line, which could have tied the score and sent the game into overtime.
But Guiao said they have decided to move on and focus on Game 2. “We'll just have to put this behind us,” he said on Spin.ph.
Guiao knows Rain or Shine needs to foil San Mig Coffee in Game 2 or they will find themselves in a deeper hole.
The game is set at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum.
