MANILA, Philippines – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. is confident he’ll be retaining his one-punch knockout power despite bulking up for the Jeffrey Mathebula fight.
“I definitely think my power will still be there. In terms of the one-punch knockout it’s all about the proper placement and the proper balance,” the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantam king told Fight Fan.com.
From a small 122-pound fighter, Donaire is trying to fill himself out as he prepares for the 5’10” Mathebula, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) title holder.
The fight takes place at the Home Depot in Carson City, California on July 7 (July 8 in Manila).
Donaire explained that he could take his knockout power to any weight-class because of the dynamics of his punch.
“The one-punch knockout tends to come when people aren’t expecting it and the velocity, speed and balance all play a big part. So I do feel it’s something I bring up in weight with me as long as the timing is there,” he said.
ABS-CBN will air the Donaire-Mathebula fight card on Channel 2 on July 8, Sunday, starting at 10 a.m.
