MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxer Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta is looking to make a statement when he fights American Ty Barnett in the main event of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights on August 3.
Gesta, an undefeated southpaw who fights at light-welterweight, is “turning up the heat” in training, his manager Vince Parra told Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing. [http://philboxing.com/news/story-72401.html
“(Mercito) is looking forward to come out agressively, after Barnett made a statement that he would knock Mercito out. We hope he comes to fight,” Parra said.
Parra said Barnett reminded him of Lamont Peterson, another fighter who came out of the Washington DC area.
“He is a tough fighter in his own right,” he said.
Barnett has a record of 20 wins, with two losses and one draw. He has won two straight fights: a unanimous decision victory over Damon Antoine and a seventh-round technical knockout of Robert Da Luz.
Gesta, for his part, recently defeated Oscar Cuero via an eighth-round TKO last April.
If Gesta defeats Barnett, Para believes the Filipino boxer may be in line for a fight against Mexican fighter Miguel Vazquez, who holds the IBF lightweight title.
