Donaire willing to take on steroid-powered boxers

MANILA, Philippines – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. is serious about drug testing as he submits himself to year-round tests through the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA).

“I decided to do this because I wanted to show that all of the things I have done, I have done through hard work. I want to show honesty towards my fans,” he said during his media conference call.

Donaire, who owns the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight title, will begin to undergo tests right after his July 7 unification title bout against International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion Jeffrey Mathebula.

The Filipino Flash encourages other fighters to try the year-round testing, including Mathebula, to show fans they have nothing to hide.

“I invite them to join, but most importantly, I want my fans to know what I am doing,” said Donaire.

But the Filipino-American boxer stressed that he’s ready to take on anyone, even those who are aided by performance-enhancing drugs or steroids.

“I can say even though you’re on it, I can still beat you.”

His promoter, Top Rank’s Bob Arum, is supportive of Donaire’s stance.

“I would hope that if we had a Federal Boxing Commission, that that commission would institute random drug testing for every single registered fighter in the United States so that we would have a system akin to what we have in the other major sports like football and baseball – under the auspices of a Federal Commission,” he said.
