MANILA, Philippines – Former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion BJ Penn recently received praise for his achievements in mixed martial arts.

The props came from the current MMA pound for pound champion Anderson Silva.

In a conference call for his middleweight title defense against Chris Weidman, Silva made it known who he considers as the best MMA fighter of all time.

“In my opinion, BJ Penn is No. 1,” said Silva in a report by [email protected] Sports

Although Penn is currently on the downside of his career, he remains one of only two multi-division champions in UFC history – the other being Randy Couture.

He has seen wars against some of the best fighters of his generation including Georges St-Pierre, Matt Hughes, Sean Sherk, Matt Serra and Jens Pulver.

The 5-foot-9 Penn climbed as high as heavyweight to challenge Lyoto Machida and also defeated Renzo and Rodrigo Gracie as a middleweight.

Silva also revealed three more fighters in his “best” list. “Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell and Royce Gracie,” he Silva.

Couture is the former three-time heavyweight champion and two-time light heavyweight titlist, while Liddell holds the record for the most knockouts in the light heavyweight division.

Gracie, who is among the UFC pioneers, has the most wins in UFC history with 11.
