MANILA, Philippines – Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions has revealed its plans for World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight king Nonito Donaire Jr.
Apart from his upcoming fight against International Boxing Federation (IBF) titlist Jeffrey Mathebula of South Africa, Donaire will be pitted against three great fighters.
"There is an endless list of guys who will be making tremendous fights with each other. HBO has recognized this, and will concentrate on bringing to the public the best of these 122-pound fighters in a series of battles. We start off with what I'm pretty sure is the No. 1 guy in the division, Nonito Donaire,” said Arum in RingTV.
"Another champion who is waiting out there is Guillermo Rigondeaux, who has two Olympic gold medals to his credit. Also out there is Jorge Arce. And sitting at ringside as I understand it, watching Nonito on July 7, will be another 122-pounder in [Toshiaki] Nishioka of Japan.”
Nishioka, Rigondeaux and Arce belong to Top Rank’s stable of fighters, which makes it easier to line them up against Donaire.
Mexican champion Abner Mares is another potential foe for the Filipino Flash, but he is currently under contract with Top Rank’s rival, Golden Boy Promotions.
“So these are really exciting times in the 122-pound division, and it all kicks off on Saturday, July 7, with Nonito against Mathebula."
ABS-CBN will air the Donaire-Mathebula fight card on Channel 2 on July 8, Sunday, starting at 10 am.
